In Wisconsin...Let The Kubb Season Begin

Posted by Wisconsin Kubb on Friday, April 29, 2016,
A little inside look at what we know about the Chippewa Falls Spring Fest Tournament tomorrow:

- It is the first non-snow (hopefully) tournament of the year in Wisconsin.
- This is one of a handful of U.S. tournaments that require at least three players on a team.
- It is the only tournament in the U.S. that we know of that uses the Sure Shot king shot. Quarterfinals and beyond. Switzerland would be proud.
- Three teams from the St. Paul Kubb Society are making the trip to Chippewa Falls. We a...

U.S. Team Cup - update

Posted by Wisconsin Kubb on Friday, April 15, 2016,
We currently have 11 teams signed up for the inaugural U.S. Team Cup. We have a great mix of teams and players. This range is from 12 years old to at least 70 years old. We have some players that are newer to the sport and some players that have been playing in tournaments since 2007. We have teams of players entirely from one community and teams with players from different communities. This is exactly what we were envisioning. All are welcome.

The next Cup Tournament is in two weeks in Chipp...

The inaugural year of the U.S. Team Cup is starting. All the 2016 information (rules, tournaments, scoring system, etc.) you need can be found on our new U.S. Team Cup webpage.

The U.S. Team Cup will allow teams that play at least four times a year to compete in a year-long competition. Even though the Ely Winterfest and Captain Ken's Loppet Tournament have already happened, those scores will count for the 2016 U.S. Team Cup.

The Draw: An Eau Claire Look Inside Groups Z and ZZ

Posted by eric anderson on Thursday, July 2, 2015,
What a U.S. Championship Team Draw last Saturday. As usual, the Team Draw gave us a variety of story lines and possible story lines that are endless. This year, the Draw was cruel for many of the top Eau Claire teams.

What are the easy story lines that we know for sure?

Well, Settlers of Baton (Kalamzoo and Minneapolis) lost to Kubb’d (Des Moines and Taylor Falls) 1-2 last year in the round of 32, and there were 10 kubbs in play in Game 3. This year, they play their last group play match agai...

The Oasis ... Goodbye Old Friend

Posted by eric anderson on Friday, June 26, 2015,
I don’t remember the first time I played kubb at The Oasis. But I will always remember the last time I played kubb at The Oasis. Last night, The Oasis hosted its last kubb matches. The invite was less than 24 hours before the last night of kubb there. It was four on four, then soon, six on six, with two little kids running around…we would have not had it any other way. Last night, I hit my first throw, an 8 meter throw from just inside the right sideline and knocking back the middle kubb....

Inkastare Training Tip 12 - Work the baseline (Remember, groups of kubbs are like snowflakes)

Posted by eric anderson on Monday, June 1, 2015,
Sometimes the best angle to inkast is not tight along the sideline. If you throw the kubb across your body so that your arm is along the sideline, but you are aiming further inside the sideline (left for right handed players), it is more difficult to cut the kubb back to the right. Also, perhaps your group is set up so that to get it in a preferred spot has high risk if you are tight along the sideline. Do not limit yourself to stand always along the sideline. Be careful though. If you...

Are Three Batons In A Row Too Many?

Posted by eric anderson on Friday, May 22, 2015,
After playing and watching a whole lot of kubb events the past few weeks, I have been doing some thinking about team size the past week.

It is no secret out there that I really like teams of three or more. At the same time, I 100 percent realize that not all U.S. tournaments can currently host tournaments with a minimum of three or more players on a team. Local interest, distance, number of tournaments, and other things prohibit some tournaments from requiring more than two people on a team. ...

On Saturday, I was fortunate enough to be able to wake up and take a drive 20 minutes north to Chippewa Falls to play in the Inaugural Leinenkugals Kubb Championship hosted by Kubb Farm. Yes, we are living the kubb dream in Wisconsin's Chippewa Valley.

I was hearing the word helicopter a lot throughout the morning. I heard it as a verb, noun, and adjective. I heard it next to me, I heard it from a distance, and I heard it out of my mouth. In the past I have felt this way once and awhile, but a...

While in Sweden, I learned a few things...even the word "set"

Posted by eric anderson on Tuesday, August 26, 2014,
While in Sweden, I learned a few things.

One of them is the term "set". In the U.S., I think most of us use the terms "game" and "match" when talking about kubb. A team has to win two "games" to win a "match". However, these two words are very similar in the English language, very similar. Actually, one could make the case they mean the same thing...at least to most people...me included. When directing tournaments, if a "match" is getting close to a timelimit, I will ask a team what "game" th...

Des Moines Kubb: What We Thought Would Be The Norm Is Actually Something Special

Posted by eric anderson on Friday, June 20, 2014,
In 2010, a handful of teams from Des Moines, IA made the trip to Eau Claire, WI. They drove five hours northeast to a city that most of them had never been before. They did this to play in the 2010 U.S. National Kubb Championship at Boyd Park. Well, it is four years later, and a whole lot of them are going to be getting five-year buttons. You see, there are six teams signed up for the 2014 U.S. Championship that have at least two players from Des Moines.

We remember thinking back in 2010 an...

For the past couple years, we here at Kubbnation Magazine headquarters have been really intrigued by what is happening with kubb in the northern half of Belgium. Here are the highlights of what we found out.

The Gift of Kubb Gives Us All the Same Thing....Memories

Yesterday was the Dallas, WI Oktoberfest Kubb Tournament and it was literally amazing. 6-player teams playing all day with our own personal brat, beer, root beer, and chili stand right next to Pitch 1. Amazing actually.

After driving home, I brought all the kubb pieces down to the basement. They were muddy, wet, filled with grass, and perhaps a drop or two of beer. As I rinsed all the kings, corner pins, batons, and kubbs, I thought a lot about the day. In particular, I was thinking about the...

The Legends

Most teams don't want to play them. Some teams fear them. However, for a very select few teams, they want to face them to test their level of play (although they are seldom 100 percent mentally committed to winning), and for their physical and mental equals, they want to play them anytime and anywhere. These teams are the Legends. It is up to an individual to determine who a Legend is and the criteria. Currently, there has to be less than a handful of teams/players that most agree are already...

After the Loppet...What we know

Posted by eric anderson on Sunday, February 3, 2013,

A backyard, 16 teams, joined the City of Lakes Loppet then 32 teams, 52 teams. That is the path for the four years of the Minnesota Kubb Winter Tournament in Minneapolis.

We were there yesterday promoting kubb by passing out flyers for all the other tournaments, gave out some 2012 U.S. Championship shirts and Kubbnation Magazines, and cheering on some fellow Eau Claire area teams. It was a great day. It was Dallas, WI Oktoberfest on steroids. It seemed Eric Goplin was getting interviewed non-...

Minnesota Kubb Tournament...What Is It?

Posted by eric anderson on Thursday, January 17, 2013,
So, I was thinking today that realistically I might not be able to play in the Minnesota Kubb Loppet Tournament. Now, if Sweden's Sons cannot play, I will be going no matter what and cheering on friends and watching some great kubb, but I was thinking more about what if I cannot play. Then that got me thinking about the tournament. I felt a real sense of disappointment that I might not be able to play. Why? It is just a kubb tournament and there are a host of others, right?

So I started think...

2013 Kubbnation Magazine is released

Posted by eric anderson on Monday, January 14, 2013,

The third edition of Kubbnation Magazine is now available. There are a host of articles in it this year. Not as many as last year, but we have a few longer articles. You will learn a lot about kubb in Belgium. Did you know they have over 50 tournaments a year and it is 1/10 the size of Wisconsin (and for the most part, only the northern half of the country plays)? As I communicated with a lot of people over there, I now have a huge urge to go to Belgium and play in a tournament. The team acti...

2013 Cover of Kubbnation Magazine

Posted by eric anderson on Tuesday, January 8, 2013,
Hello world. The cover of the 2013 Kubbnation Magazine is now available. Look for the release of the magazine next week. You can look at a high-quality pdf of the cover at our Kubbnation Magazine page. The focus of the cover this year is American kubb in 2012.

In searching and searching for a photo for the cover this year, we realized that we just could not match the 2012 cover. Plain and simple, it was not going to happen. From there, we thought more and more about 2012 and what it was. 20...

Kubbnation Magazine...coming soon...

Posted by eric anderson on Friday, January 4, 2013,
We have been working hard on Kubbnation Magazine over the past couple months. Actually, it is more than just us that have been working hard on it. We have several articles from different people this year, from around the world. We are really excited about it. Also, all the pictures in the issue are from people that took pictures throughout the year, and they worked hard as well. There are a lot of pictures from Blind Photography in Des Moines, IA. Check them out.

Here is our timeline, which i...

U.S. Championship - New Rules Document

Posted by eric anderson on Monday, December 3, 2012,
We here at Wisconsin Kubb and Kubbnation Magazine just saw that the U.S. Championship has come out with a new rules document. Below are the comments that the U.S. Championship put along with it.

Good morning from Eau Claire, WI. We here at the U.S. Championship wanted to let everyone know that a new version of the rules is now available on our website. When you look at the new document, you are going to see a lot more diagrams that explain the game a lot better. We are really excited and ha...

Kubb Capital. What does it mean?

Posted by eric anderson on Wednesday, November 28, 2012,

I was thinking a couple weeks ago, what does it mean to be Kubb Capital of North America, and how can we meet any expectations of us being it. Well, two things came to mind. First, a lot of us have to play a lot of kubb, and a lot of us have to play a lot of kubb. Simple as that.

Well, I was told the other day that The Local Store is moving kubb sets at a warp speed right now. OK, perhaps not at warp speed, but as fast as a Dave Ellringer blast. The Local Store is Volume One's creation to help...

U.S. Midwest Kubb Championship - 2013

Posted by eric anderson on Monday, November 12, 2012,
Well, an idea has been generating for a few months about the possibility of bringing back the U.S. Midwest Kubb Championship. As some of you know, the Eau Claire Tournament started in 2007. In 2008 and 2009, it was called the U.S. Midwest Kubb Championship. Then in 2010, it turned into the U.S. Championship. Well, it was time to bring back the Midwest Championship and give another big one for teams to play in. In addition, it will allow clubs/communities that are hosting the tournament to get...

Kubbnation Magazine. A Look Behind the Scenes

Posted by eric anderson on Sunday, October 28, 2012,
Are we really working on the third edition of Kubbnation Magazine? It is really amazing to think about that. There are quite a few things in the works right now, and there are articles coming from different states and countries as well. We are really excited about all the different things happening.

One thing we are doing is a kubb set review. Not a "this set is good" and "this set is bad", but a "tale of the tape". Dimensions, weights, what comes with the sets, etc. We believe that all sets ...

Dallas, WI Oktoberfest ... Fun, Learned, and Will Remember

Posted by eric anderson on Monday, October 8, 2012,
What a wonderful day in Dallas, WI. It is always so beautiful to drive into the town from the east, down the hill, and see the little village of 350 people, with the church steeple hanging high over the town and the assortment of colors on the trees in the background.

Well, for those of you that don't know, this was the first required six-person team tournament in the U.S., and I think the first tournament with painted kubbs. 14 teams registered, and 12 teams ended up making the trip. Yes, tha...

What's In A Team Name

Posted by eric anderson on Tuesday, October 2, 2012,
So, I have been thinking about something for the past few months, then I read a blog today and I started thinking about it in a different way as well. That is, kubb team names and what they mean, and to the team and others.

First, I have thought what would happen if I was taking registration for the Rockford kubb tournament and a team from Chicago signed up and wanted the team name Kubbsicles. What would I say? Well, I have thought about it and the answer is that I would tell them to have a d...

The Meatgrinder and Phil and Jeremiah

Posted by eric anderson on Friday, September 28, 2012,
The Meatgrinder. Des Moines, IA. 32 teams. Swiss System. You call it the Klassic. I will continue to call it The Meatgrinder. I am not sure what it is like to play in it if you are not aiming for a quarterfinal placement, but for me, the juices are flowing early, and I like that. For the second year in a row, the team I was on had the toughest schedule, and I wouldn't want it any other way. That is why I travel five plus hours to play kubb. We travelled with Team Kubboom from Eau Claire to th...

Companies Come To Kubb

Posted by eric anderson on Tuesday, August 28, 2012,
Companies sponsoring kubb tournaments is a great thing. I mean really great thing. Without them, our tournaments right now just would not be what they are. In addition, over the past four months, I have had the opportunity to talk with two different companies that are looking at kubb as an investment. Not that the others are not looking at kubb as an investment, but these two are branding their products through kubb, and I find that, well to be honest, amazing. I like to think that they are m...
