Des Moines Kubb: What We Thought Would Be The Norm Is Actually Something Special

Posted by eric anderson on Friday, June 20, 2014,
In 2010, a handful of teams from Des Moines, IA made the trip to Eau Claire, WI. They drove five hours northeast to a city that most of them had never been before. They did this to play in the 2010 U.S. National Kubb Championship at Boyd Park. Well, it is four years later, and a whole lot of them are going to be getting five-year buttons. You see, there are six teams signed up for the 2014 U.S. Championship that have at least two players from Des Moines.

We remember thinking back in 2010 an...

Tyr's Tre - One Player's Inside Look Of Winning The Rockford, IL Tournament

Posted by eric anderson on Friday, May 23, 2014,
By: Eric Anderson

Background:
Rockford, IL is my hometown. Born in Swedish American Hospital and raised one block off Broadway. Left in 2001 to pursue some other things, have never called it home since, but Rockford will always be part of me. I have lots of family and friends that still live there, most of which I unfortunately seldom see. A few years ago, I approached the Swedish Historical Society to see if they would like to host a kubb tournament. The ideas was to use it for a fundraiser fo...

De Mirakelkubbers

Posted by eric anderson on Thursday, May 1, 2014,
Yesterday we posted an article about kubb in Belgium, and we provided a link to the team De Mirakelkubbers. Well, that link did not take you to their website. We fixed that, and we thought we would add a new one here.

You can also follow them on Twitter at @Mirakelkubbers
and on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/Mirakelkubbers

As we type this up early on Thursday morning, they are taking part in a May Day kubb tournament in Belgium. Good luck to them.

A Deeper Look Inside Kubb in Belgium - 57 Tournaments and National Ranking System

Posted by eric anderson on Wednesday, April 30, 2014,
For the past couple years, we here at Kubbnation Magazine headquarters have been really intrigued by what is happening with kubb in the northern half of Belgium. We recently saw that they have an annual ranking/scoring system for teams, and we knew we needed to know more, as we would love to see that happen in the U.S. We contacted one of our contacts in Belgium, and he put us in contact with Mr. Jonas Steelandt. Here are the highlights of what we found out.

The system was taken from a similar...

Game Of Throws: Movie, Radio Recap, and Video from World Premiere

If you are a kubb player or supporter, you have must heard of the movie Game of Throws that came out last Saturday. If you have not watched it, check it out this weekend. After you have watched it, we highly recommend listening to Matt Wigdahl and Eric Anderson be interviewed by Chad Bevers and Evan Fitzgerald on Fox Valley Kubb Radio. It is a fun and insightful look into the film. Lastly, there were over 80 people at the world premiere. If you were not able to make it to the world premiere l...

Captain Ken's Loppet Reflection

Posted by eric anderson on Tuesday, February 4, 2014,
What a beautiful day on a lake in the middle of Minneapolis, MN. 32 pitches were set up and then the sun came out. If you were not there, pictures would not tell the story. We were playing on pitches 29 and 30. The pitches next to us and behind us were littered with people yelling, screaming, laughing, and having a great time. You can seldom capture that energy in a picture, and it was constant. Before the tournament started the tournament director, Eric Goplin, asked people to raise their ha...

Interview with Team Knockerheads - A look at the Loppet and 2014 season

Posted by eric anderson on Thursday, January 30, 2014,
The first tournament of the year is this weekend in Minneapolis, MN. With 3.5 million people, the Twin Cities area is currently the largest city on the U.S. Kubb Tournament Circuit, and this year the tournament is the Captain Ken’s Kubb Tournament, as part of the City of Lakes Loppet. A whole lot of top players are playing at the Captain Ken’s Tournament, but many of the top teams are playing on hybrid teams or with different players. However, one complete top team that is attending is th...

A Year To Remember: Mixing It Up In 2013 - 13 Tournaments and 12 Different Teams.

Posted by eric anderson on Friday, January 17, 2014,
While proof-reading the 2014 Kubbnation Magazine (by the way, did you hear it came out on Wednesday?), my proof-reading assistant (my wife Erin) asked me who won the Fox Valley Kubb Radio (we will be on the air Sunday night at 8pm…listen live) FOXY Award for Best U.S. Male Kubber. My response was “Dobbie”. Her response was “How about Dave?” My response was, “Really. Dave?” Her response was, “I think he is in almost every picture here in the Tournament Results section.”

Kubb Radio Show - 11/10/13

Posted by eric anderson on Tuesday, November 12, 2013,
We here at Kubbnation Magazine had a great time on Fox Valley Kubb Radio Sunday. We got to talk about a lot of different things. It included what city is going to host the 2015 U.S. Midwest Kubb Championship and possible future US Kubb Association. In addition, we told people to call in and request player cards for themselves and their friends. Other topics included the evolution of eight meter baton throw and the U.S. Championship Kubb Set Grant that is open until the end of December. You ca...

Team Knockerheads Add Evan Fitzgerald (An Exclusive Interview)

Posted by eric anderson on Friday, October 25, 2013,
The year 2013 was a great year for Team Knockerheads. As a two or three-player team, they won the U.S. Midwest Championship, the 52-team winter Loppet tournament, the Des Moines Fall Klassic, Kasson, and Decorah, not to mention bringing home yet another podium finish at the U.S. Championship (3rd). The Freight Train, as we like to call them here at Kubbnation Magazine, was full steam ahead.

2007-2013 Growth (with graphs)

Posted by eric anderson on Tuesday, October 22, 2013,
So, let’s say you have a business and it is Year 1. In Year 1, you had 18 accounts. You were really happy with that 18. Heck, the year before you didn’t even have this business. The next year you had 23, then Year 3 you had 34. In Year 4, just three years after you started, you had 57 accounts. Yes, that is a 217 percent increase in accounts. Pretty good over three years. And remember, you were happy with the 18. Who are we kidding. This business is zoned in like the Kubb Snipers.

The Gift of Kubb Gives Us All the Same Thing....Memories

Posted by eric anderson on Sunday, October 6, 2013,
Yesterday was the Dallas, WI Oktoberfest Kubb Tournament and it was literally amazing. 6-player teams playing all day with our own personal brat, beer, root beer, and chili stand right next to Pitch 1. Amazing actually.

After driving home, I brought all the kubb pieces down to the basement. They were muddy, wet, filled with grass, and perhaps a drop or two of beer. As I rinsed all the kings, corner pins, batons, and kubbs, I thought a lot about the day. In particular, I was thinking about the...

September 21, 2013

Posted by eric anderson on Wednesday, September 25, 2013,
The day was September 21, 2013.

I learned a lot about what is going on in the world of kubb this past Saturday, and at least for myself, it is another experience that changes how I see kubb in the U.S.

Tournaments:
Myself, I traveled to Des Moines, IA to play in their 4th Annual Fall Kubb Klassic. It was my third year in a row going to the tournament. Actually, 10 people from Eau Claire traveled to Des Moines to play (two of which are currently at their respective universities) and two others c...

The Legends

Posted by eric anderson on Wednesday, September 18, 2013,
Most teams don't want to play them. Some teams fear them. However, for a very select few teams, they want to face them to test their level of play (although they are seldom 100 percent mentally committed to winning), and for their physical and mental equals, they want to play them anytime and anywhere. These teams are the Legends. It is up to an individual to determine who a Legend is and the criteria. Currently, there has to be less than a handful of teams/players that most agree are already...

U.S. Championship: Experiences and teachings

Posted by eric anderson on Wednesday, July 17, 2013,
What a two days at the U.S. Championship. Actually, what a Championship Week, and if you were in Eau Claire, more like a Championship Two Weeks. We here at Kubbnation Magazine were not able to watch as many kubb matches as we would have liked, but we caught some great matches, amazing team shirts, and experienced an amazing Kubb Party.

On Sunday night, we reflected a little on some of the things that seemed to never leave our head. Yet again, it seems like we learned something about ku...

Who are these people? And what in the world are they thinking?

Posted by eric anderson on Tuesday, July 2, 2013,
So, imagine this. Imagine that you have never heard about the game kubb before. Pick a state outside of WI, MN, IA, and IL, and you live there. Say, Oregon or North Carolina. It is last weekend. Beautiful summer day. One of your friends stumbled upon this game and made a set. You and your family head over there and play a little. You like it, you have a good time. You are tossing kubbs with no real thought. Your batons are pretty vertical, and they are spinning like a fan. Lots of fun and lot...

Madison Midsommar Tournament

Posted by eric anderson on Monday, June 10, 2013,
We have been a little busy here at Kubbnation Magazine, so we have not had time to finish up the recap from our reporter that went down to Madison for Madison Kubb's 2nd Annual Midsommar Tournament. It increased by roughly 10 teams, which is a great increase. The TV news media was there, which is huge. We here at Kubbnation Magazine strongly believe that Madison is one of those markets, along with a Minneapolis/St. Paul, that the whole kubb community will feel it as the Madison kubb scene gro...

Two Kubbs In Eau Claire

Posted by eric anderson on Tuesday, May 21, 2013,
Well, Eau Claire hosted a Kubb: Learn To Play & Friendly event this past Sunday. You can see pictures here. You can see a video here. All things considered, it was a success. Lots and lots of work, but we were able to introduce it to 50 or so new people, one of which is the new EC City Manager and his family. After the event, I started thinking more and more about a few things. One of which was a couple of the people I met at the event and another was a few stories that I either heard at the ...

2013 U.S. Midwest Kubb Championship

Posted by eric anderson on Monday, May 6, 2013,
Well, Kubbnation Magazine sent a reporter down to the U.S. Midwest Championship in Rockford, IL from our Kubbnation Headquarters here in Eau Claire, WI. We did not know how to dress, as we had just gotten nine inches of snow, and the forecast for Rockford for the two days prior ranged from rain to sun and from 50s to 70s. But we made it and had a great time. Below is a link to the Tournament Results page of our website where you can read about the tournament.

Minnesota Kubb Tournament...What Is It?

Posted by eric anderson on Thursday, January 17, 2013,
So, I was thinking today that realistically I might not be able to play in the Minnesota Kubb Loppet Tournament. Now, if Sweden's Sons cannot play, I will be going no matter what and cheering on friends and watching some great kubb, but I was thinking more about what if I cannot play. Then that got me thinking about the tournament. I felt a real sense of disappointment that I might not be able to play. Why? It is just a kubb tournament and there are a host of others, right?

So I started think...

2013 Kubbnation Magazine is released

Posted by eric anderson on Monday, January 14, 2013,

The third edition of Kubbnation Magazine is now available. There are a host of articles in it this year. Not as many as last year, but we have a few longer articles. You will learn a lot about kubb in Belgium. Did you know they have over 50 tournaments a year and it is 1/10 the size of Wisconsin (and for the most part, only the northern half of the country plays)? As I communicated with a lot of people over there, I now have a huge urge to go to Belgium and play in a tournament. The team acti...

2013 Cover of Kubbnation Magazine

Hello world. The cover of the 2013 Kubbnation Magazine is now available. Look for the release of the magazine next week. You can look at a high-quality pdf of the cover at our Kubbnation Magazine page. The focus of the cover this year is American kubb in 2012.

In searching and searching for a photo for the cover this year, we realized that we just could not match the 2012 cover. Plain and simple, it was not going to happen. From there, we thought more and more about 2012 and what it was. 20...

Also, all the pictures in the issue are from people that took pictures throughout the year, and they worked hard as well. There are a lot of pictures from Blind Photography in Des Moines, IA. We here at Wisconsin Kubb and Kubbnation Magazine just saw that the U.S. Championship has come out with a new rules document. Below are the comments that the U.S. Championship put along with it.

Good morning from Eau Claire, WI. We here at the U.S. Championship wanted to let everyone know that a new version of the rules is now available on our website. Kubbnation Magazine. A Look Behind the Scenes

Posted by eric anderson on Sunday, October 28, 2012,
Are we really working on the third edition of Kubbnation Magazine? It is really amazing to think about that. There are quite a few things in the works right now, and there are articles coming from different states and countries as well. We are really excited about all the different things happening.

One thing we are doing is a kubb set review. Not a "this set is good" and "this set is bad", but a "tale of the tape". Dimensions, weights, what comes with the sets, etc. We believe that all sets ...

Companies Come To Kubb

Posted by eric anderson on Tuesday, August 28, 2012,
Companies sponsoring kubb tournaments is a great thing. I mean really great thing. Without them, our tournaments right now just would not be what they are. In addition, over the past four months, I have had the opportunity to talk with two different companies that are looking at kubb as an investment. Not that the others are not looking at kubb as an investment, but these two are branding their products through kubb, and I find that, well to be honest, amazing. I like to think that they are m...
