OLD NEWS
2011
December 06
If you are looking to play some winter tournament kubb, Minnesota Kubb is hosting the largest winter kubb tournament ever in the U.S. on February 04. It is part of a ski race event in Minneapolis with 1,000s of people. Remember, tournaments are just one big kubb party.

Tournament pitches will be set up on Lake Calhoun just west of Tin Fish Restaurant near the Snow Sculpture Contest. Additional pitches will be available for non-participants to learn and play the game. Find one of our Kubb Ambassadors who can explain the game and get you started on your own game. Fire pits will be available to warm up participants and spectators. Hot cocoa, beer, food and bathrooms facilities will be available throughout the day.

December 02
The 2012 Kubbnation Magazine will be released in the second week of January. You can find updates here and on the U.S. National Kubb Championship Facebook page.

November 18
We are BIG time excited to announce that the first ever U.S. National Kubb Championship University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Scholarship (awarded annually to a student who will be studying abroad in one of the Nordic countries) was given out this past week. She will be studying next semester in Växjö, Sweden.

"Kubb unites people and creates peace on Earth."

October 28
The kings for the U.S. National Kubb Championship have been painted. 51 of them, to be exact. It took several coats and a wrong blue that needed to be painted over, but it got done. Red on top. White in the middle. Blue below the white. Then a small strip of yellow on the bottom. The red, white, and blue need no explaining. The strip of yellow (next to the blue) represents and pays respect to Sweden, the home of the Kubb World Championship. You can see pictures on the tournament Facebook page Friday morning.

October 02
What a way to finsh the 2011 Tournament Season at the Dallas Oktoberfest. Teams from WI, MN, and IA. Kubbnation put on a great show in Dallas, WI. In a village of 356 people, the kubb tournament increased that population by over 20% between players, friends, and family. The 10 pitches were surrounded by spectators all day. We feel like we added a ton to the Oktoberfest. Thanks to everyone.

More results. This was an AMAZING tournament.

What is happening October 1st in Dallas, WI? First and foremost, there is a 20 team kubb tournament (that has a long waiting list to get in). Oh yeah, there is also the 15th annual Dallas Oktoberfest. If you have never been, this is the year to go...trust us. There is even going to be a keg-a-pult. Read more here.

September 08
The 2nd annual Des Moines Fall Kubb Klassic is now two weeks away. Over 20 teams (five plus states) have already registered. There is still plenty of time to register. This is being hosted by the same group that came to Eau Claire with kubb decals on their cars. You know this going to be a party. Looking at hotel rates, there are a lot of good prices to be had. Contact Des Moines Kubb for the location to look at for hotels.

September 02
New information regarding the 96-team 2012 U.S. National Kubb Championship is available. The dates of the tournament are July 14 and 15. You will notice some large changes: two-day tournament and minimum of three players on a team. You will also find some smaller changes: team t-shirt contest, raffle, Swedish brats will make a comeback, etc. The goal has always been to create an environment that is fair and enjoyable for all. We feel that the 2012 U.S. Championship will continue to do that. We hope you decide to come to Eau Claire to play kubb in 2012.

August 30

Dallas Oktoberfest Kubb Tournament team list is available.

August 28
It was a great day for Wisconsin kubb and kubb as a whole in Appleton, WI yesterday. Teams traveled from Madison and the Chippewa Valley to play in the 2nd Annual Fox Valley Kubb Tournament. Thanks to the Fox Valley Kubb Club for hosting the tournament.

August 26

Tomorrow. Appleton, WI. Kubb Tournament. Results will be posted here on Saturday night or Sunday morning.

August 24
A lot of people have asked questions about the Kubb World Championship and how it differs from tournaments here in the U.S. and/or the U.S. Championship. Obviously their top talent is a lot deeper than ours, as they have been playing a lot longer than 99 percent of us have.

The one big thing that stood out was the diversity of teams. Again, you have to have at least six people on a team at the WC. Aside from the obvious all male teams, there were numerous teams that were all women in the 40s or 50s and teams of all women in their 20s. There were teams with three couples with an average age of 70. There were teams of young teenagers. Simply, ever age and gender category possible had teams.

I often hear from people when I ask them to play in a tournament, that they are not good enough and that is why they do not want to play. Being at the WC reinforced my belief that these tournaments are competitions, yes, but they are so much more than that. They are a celebration of kubb and a means to have a great relaxing day with friends and/or family. Every team at the Kubb WC was having a great time, and trust me when I say that the overwhelming number of teams were there to see how far they could go (knowing they would not make the final eight or so) and take part in the largest kubb party in the world, on an island right in the middle of the Baltic Sea.

August 18
The second big change for the U.S. National Championship is minimum team size. For a lot of you, this is not an issue, as you play on three or more person teams already. For others, this will be a change. For both the two day tournament and increasing team size, I wanted to give everyone notice as far in advance as possible, as I do not think of this tournament as my tournament, but our tournament.

In 2007, we started this tournament with not so many people knowing about kubb. We set the teams as having at least two people for each team. That was out of necessity and not knowing much about what was happening in Europe with kubb tournaments. Well, five years later kubb is becoming a lot more popular, and we are learning that many tournaments in Europe have six-person teams and very few have two-person teams. At the same time, the Eau Claire tournament is steadily growing (on average 16 new teams a year) and we want to include everyone. It is hard to know what the future holds for the number of teams that come to Eau Claire to play in the National Championship, but since 2009 we have always tried to be a legitimate tournament on par with what we knew was happening in Europe. We think that we have accomplished that goal.

As I mentioned in the discussion about the two-day tournament change, we have never done anything with a quick decision or without thinking about players. We have thought things out and weighed pros and cons. After thinking about this for two years, talking to players playing here in Eau Claire and other tournaments, and talking to people from around the world and playing on a six-person team in Sweden, having more than two people on a team is true team kubb. There is so much more strategy, pressure, excitement, and energy. With two, there is one high-five. With three there are three high-fives. With two, you share your joys and frustration with one. With three, you double it. With that, the U.S. National Championship will be switching to a minimum of three-person teams starting in 2012.

There have been dozens of three-person teams that have played in all the tournaments around the Midwest over the past five years. A couple really stick out. Peanut Butter Root Beer Snakes won in Eau Claire back in 2008. The Skipping Stones, Team Lutefisk, Lakerol Originals, Red Cedar River Yacht Club, I could go on and on. I think about Odin's Own from Philly in Rockford this Spring. Three guys making a 1000 mile journey to play kubb together. What energy that team brought to Rockford. A few have stated that they like the two-player format, mostly because they have their two people. Perhaps it is a husband/wife or father/daughter. I am in the same boat, as nothing in kubb has been more special to me than to play with my dad in the three tournaments that we played in together. Two of them were just us two. However, we did team up with my friend a third time. Looking back, I found that to be more of a test and at the same time more enjoyable. My friend Ethan was not a third wheel, oh no. Ethan was part of the team and he increased the energy, enjoyment, and excitement for the team that day. My dad and I both believe that.

Two Saturday nights ago, I was sitting in an enclosed patio of a house out in the countryside of southern Gotland. I was talking with five young men of a Gotland team called Signalgatan. When questioning them about six-person teams, throwing one baton, and if it is really more enjoyable for them. I will never forget their answers and their seriousness for the sport. For them, it is the only way to be played. There is so much that goes into it. We will be able to experience it so much more with three-person teams for our National Championship, and I am excited for the tournament to head in that direction.

I look forward to this next chapter of the U.S. National Kubb Championship.

August 16
After a lot of thought and discussion about the U.S. National Championship, there are going to be a few changes happening in the next couple of years. The first of which is we are happy to have created an annual UWEC scholarship for a student studying abroad in one of the five Nordic countries. We are very excited about this. We feel this 100% meets the intent of the saying - Kubb unites people and creates peace on Earth.

The second change is quite a bit bigger. We have heard from a lot of people, especially through the surveys from the past two years that they would like to watch the Championship Match, but it is too late. At the same time, well over 80 percent want every team to make the playoffs and do not want time limits in the playoffs. In addition, for a variety of reasons we cannot have any future tournaments ending after 9pm like we did this year (10:15pm), or even after 7pm. After looking at all of these things and having a few conversations with a variety of different teams, the U.S. National Kubb Championship will now become a two day tournament. The final 16 or eight teams will come back Sunday morning and compete. There is a lot more that will go into this (Consolation Bracket Semifinal and Championship in front of the bleachers on Saturday, local promotions for both days, at least another five or six new ideas that might happen, ending earlier enough Sunday to get people on the road to travel home, etc.). We have never wanted to make extreme changes too quickly with this tournament, and we hope that we are keeping with that process. However, this tournament has gotten so large, interest continues to grow, and we want to respect what we feel the vast majority of the teams would like, so this will start in 2012. Another rather large announcement will be coming later this week.

August 12
Eric Anderson of Wisconsinkub.com played on the Stockholm team The Emigrants at the 191-team Kubb World Championship in Sweden. They made it to the final 16.

Yesterday set a one-day record with 173 unique visitors. Thanks to everyone, from literally around the world, who come to this site.

July 10

Business just picked up, and not just a little. In 2009, a husband and wife team from Savage, MN battled through the heat, rain, and mud to win the 2009 title after over 10 hours of kubb. They beat The Ringers in the quarterfinals and Team McKie in the semifinals. Well ladies and gents, they just registered for 2011. Welcome back Savage Stick Flickers. It's great to have you back.

June 18
Listen to the WIEC Community Radio promo. Only three weeks left. Friday night before the tournament and Saturday night after the tournament, all are welcome to come down to The Fire House. More information coming soon on that.

June 12
Often people ask if they can play in the U.S. Championship if they have never played before, have only played a few times, and/or are not the best. The answer to that is YES. More than a kubb tournament it is a celebration of the game. All are welcome. We only have a few spots left, so if you are interested, but have not played a lot, no worries. Please think about playing.

June 10
One: Check out the tournament poster. Two: We will live stream the semi-finals and final match at the 2011 U.S. Championship.

June 08
What's the U.S. National Kubb Championship? It's the biggest, baddest, battle kubb royal in the world. To win the Championship, a team will need to play nine best-of-three matches (and that is with getting a first round playoff bye) and win their last six, over an almost 11 hour period of time. One team will do it. Come one, come all. Eau Claire is waiting...

June 04
Our first team from Indiana registered for the U.S. Nationals. A big welcome to Learned and Burned from Columbus, IN. What a great day at the Ager House yesterday in downtown Eau Claire. Over 40 people showed up during the two hours. A trophy that the Ager Association is giving to the 2011 Champions was available for all to see as well. Beautiful.

May 24
The little old website wisconsinkubb.com had its 22,000th unique visitor today. Thanks to all. If you live in or around the Chippewa Valley, please consider coming to the Ager Association Open House and Kubb Friendly on June 4th 1-3pm.

May 16
The U.S. National Championship now has 80 teams. We will take more teams. If we can reach 88 teams, the bracketing for that will work as well. Let's get up to 88.

May 14
Updated Rockford groups are now available. From Lakeland, FL to San Francisco, CA and everywhere in between (not to mention Germany and Sweden), thanks to everyone who came to the site yesterday. The hits are up over 50% from last year.

April 04
There is a new state kubb website in the neighborhood. From South Beloit all the way down to Cairo, a big welcome to Illinoiskubb.com.

March 28
I have gotten a few questions regarding the kubb sets from Menards. After looking at them, they are significantly smaller than other sets that are available for purchase. Comparing them to the Old Time Games' competition sets, the kubbs are probably about 60% the width of the sets used at the U.S. National Championship and the throwing batons are also smaller in width. It is great that kubb is getting a lot more attention. However, it should be noted that these sets are significantly smaller in size than most sets that are available for purchase.

March 22
Registration is on fire for both Rockford and Eau Claire. Rockford has 42 teams and Eau Claire has 45. That means that there are only six spots left for Rockford and 35 for Eau Claire. We would like to thank Old Time Games yet again for sponsoring both of these tournaments. They have been sponsoring the tournaments since the beginning of both. The U.S. Championship will be welcoming two new sponsors real soon. Look for more information next week.

February 26
Registration for the 2011 National Championship opens on March 01. Also, a big welcome to foxvalleykubb.com. Another great kubb website in the upper Midwest.

February 02
Des Moines Kubb Club has completed a comprehensive English version of the World Championship rules. You can find them here. This is the set of rules that will be used for the U.S. National Kubb Championship. The intent of publishing these rules is to help people better understand the rules and continue to create a fair and enjoyable atmosphere for tournament play. The Rockford, IL Swedish Historical Society's tournament registration started yesterday. Already, 18 teams are signed up. Teams are coming from IL, WI, IA, MN, and PA.

Summer and Fall of 2010
What a great summer and fall of kubb in the upper Midwest. New tournaments in Des Moines and Rockford, more people interested in the game, heading back to the schools in Eau Claire, a great article about kubb in Volume One, and a National Championship with 64 teams.

(News from June 2010 - November 2010 was lost)

June 02
Literally days until Rockford is on the kubb tournament map. 32 teams made up of 70 plus players all converging on Rockford, IL. This is only the beginning for Rockford. The start of something real special. Welcome Rockford. Välkommen till den kubbolutionen.

May 22
What is going on with kubb this summer in Eau Claire? How about this (and it is only May). Introducing it to 4th and 5th grade gym classes (early June), big article in Volume One (middle of June), 2010 U.S. National Kubb Championship (July 17), introducing it to Special Olympics at the Saturday farmers market (end of July), and a second tournament here in New Gotland put on by Habitat For Humanity (Sept. 18). Our kubb culture can only be equaled on Gotland.

May 18
People in Rockford, IL are wondering what is the noise in the distance. It's coming closer and closer and getting louder and louder. We will tell you what it is. It's the kubbolution of kubbnation coming. Less than three weeks away. Yep, that is right, a 32 team tournament, with over 70 players, right in the heart of the northern Illinois.

May 06
Rockford press conference on May 4th.

March 24
I have been getting questions regarding the tournaments in Eau Claire and Rockford over the past weeks. The common question is what is the atmosphere like and what type of players play. Both tournaments will resemble the past tournaments in Eau Claire. They will include players that range from beginners to seasoned kubbers. Players will be there to relax and enjoy a beautiful summer day while playing kubb, while others will be there to make it as far as they can. Regardless, the atmosphere is family friendly and all are there with the understanding that kubb unites people and creates peace on Earth. I am hoping to meet a lot of you in Eau Claire, Rockford, and/or Dallas. On a side note, five teams from Des Moines just signed up for the National Championship. THAT, is what I am talking about.

March 18
What do Moscow, Dublin, Telemark, Hemse, Auckland, Weinheim, Edmonton, Hässleholm, Örebro, and Zurich all have in common? During the last few days, people there have been reading about kubb in Wisconsin. There is no doubt about it, Wisconsin Kubb is global. The website has double the number of hits for the year, at this time last year. Thanks to everyone. Where will number 12,000 come from? We should know at the end of the month.

February 18
Another great evening at Boyd Park. Over 300 people showed up. In the middle of it all was Berserkernation tossing lumber in the snow. We introduced the game to several groups of people including about a dozen young kids.

January 14
After a few weeks of a broken computer, the website is now being updated again. 2010 tournament information is available. Here in Eau Claire, a community event called Winter After Hours just started. Check it out online. The Berserkers will be playing and introducing kubb there every Thursday evening through the end of February. We must have introduced it to over 30 people on the first night, and there were well over 200 people at the park during the evening.

2009
October 04
The fourth and final kubb tournament in the kubb-triangle was held yesterday in Dallas, WI. Thanks to all the teams, dozens of people that came over and asked questions, and the sponsors: Village of Dallas, Viking Brewing Co., and Old Time Games. The weather kept some teams away, but eight showed up and kubbed on. In the final, Red Herron (Eau Claire and Clear Lake) beat Kanelbullarna (Eau Claire) 2-1 to win the Viking Mug. It is safe to say that the 2010 Dallas Oktoberfest will also include a kubb tournament.

September 22
A BIG thanks to the UM - Duluth Kubb Klub for putting on another great tournament. 16 teams showed up and took part in the action. Speaking of tournaments, you can still register for the Dallas, WI/Viking Brewing Co. Oktoberfest Kubb Tournament. Who will walk away with the Viking Cup? Also, our kubb friends out in Salem, Oregon are having a tournament on 10/04.

September 11
I started tracking website hits on May 09, 2007, a few weeks after the site was born. At 1:48pm today, wisconsinkubb.com had its 10,000 visitor. Sandwiched between Madison (WI), Des Moines (IA), Rochester (NY), and Germantown (MD), someone in Big Lake, MN was the 10,000 visitor. Thanks to everyone.

September 10
Today, one of the 10 time world champions sent me a video from the 2009 World Championship final match in Sweden. Enjoy. What a great environment. Also, August set a monthly record for number of visitors on the website, with 1,013 visitors, which broke the previous high of 877 from July 2008.

August 22
At the WHYS Radio Bluegrass Festival today, we had four pitches going at one time. With an international student contingent from the U, we had players from China, Germany, Serbia, Sweden, and the U.S. In some parts of the world, that is something special. Here, in Nya Gotland (New Gotland), it is just another Saturday.

August 09
If you were there in the afternoon on August 8th, you will forever remember the 2009 Championship as the Championship when the heavens opened up. Congratulations to the Savage Stick Flickers from Savage, MN. I would like to thank all the sponsors, participants, spectators, volunteers, Girls on the Run of Eau Claire County for serving food, the Red Cedar River Yacht Club for the additional silent auction items, and my buddy Ethan Stapp for making the trophies way out in Helena, MT. We raised $2900. See you next year.

August 07
As kubb teams and their battle cries begin to descend on Eau Claire, it is 62 degrees and a light steady rain is blanketing the city. The forecast for the Championship is partly cloudy with a slight chance of storms. High in the upper 80s. The pitches are marked and ready for battle.

August 03
Congratulations to World Champions Team Ekeby for winning their 10th world championship this past weekend on the Swedish island of Gotland. The first video from the tournament is available.

August 01st
It has been accomplished. 48 teams are signed up to play kubb in Eau Claire in one week. Some said it could not be done. Never underestimate the kubbolution. We will be taking additional registrations, in case a team or two needs to cancel.

July 28th
There are now 42 teams signed up for the tournament. Teams are coming from six states. Ann Arbor will be in Eau Claire, again, after making the trip back in 2007. We will stop registration at 48 teams, so register now. The trophies are making their way from Helena, Montana. Eric will be on our ABC morning show on the 28th and on the NBC station Tuesday next week. Promos are running on both WHYS and WIEC radio stations. The t-shirts have been picked up. Posters are up all around town.

July 20th
Chippewa Valley Community TV was nice enough to tape and run a promo over the next three weeks. A few too many "come on downs", but hey, it is all about the kubbolution.

July 13th
The day is not even over yet, and the website has had hits from Argentina, Iceland, Norway, Germany, Sweden, and 11 U.S. states. There are now 31 teams signed up and Madison will be on a pitch. Thanks to all the sponsors, 100% of the money will be going to the two organizations.

July 02nd
Yesterday, wisconsinkubb had its 8,000 visitor. Where did it come from you ask? The visitor was from Reston, VA. A big Badger State thank you to number 8,000 and the 7,999 previous visitors. Over the month of June, the site had 646 visitors. Not bad, we say. As of today, there are 27 teams signed up.

June 18th
The first tournament of the year was held in Lindstrom, MN. Kubb'ra Kai Dojo won the tournament. Thanks to the Nobbele Kubb Klub for organizing the event. From June to October, there are four tournaments in the kubb triangle of Eau Claire, the Twin Cities, and Duluth/Superior. In addition, the links page has been updated. If you have any information that you would like on the site, please let us know.

February 14th
The second annual Eau Claire Winter Kubb Friendly was held today. A beautiful Wisconsin sunny winter day, with a temp of 22 degrees. Around 40 people showed up. Three different pitches had games and the grill was full.
