U.S. Midwest Kubb Tournament & Fundraiser
All proceeds went to USA
for UNHCR and Eau Claire County's Girls
on the Run program.
The event had 31 teams and 76 participants representing five different
states. There were teams from Wisconsin (13), Minnesota (12),
Illinois (4), Iowa (1), and Colorado (1). The event raised $1800
for the two organizations. The proceeds to USA for UNHCR provided
12 survival kits to refugees from the Darfur region of Sudan.
The proceeds to Girls on the Run provided shoes and costs for
girls from low-income families in Eau Claire County who want to
participate in the Girls on the Run program.
Here are a few of many highlights from the day.
The sun came up over the Chippewa Valley. Kubb sets were set up
on all 16 pitches. The Swedish and American flags were raised.
Teams started registering at 8:15. A 1983 Marvin Gaye rendition
of the National Anthem. A group photo. 15 games being played at
one time. Music from The
New North String Band. Brats and burgers for lunch. Ice cream
made right in Eau Claire from 9
Degrees immediately after lunch. The sun beating down on the
players and pitches. The Molteberry Magic never saying quit and
playing two of the longest matches of the day. Two early upsets
in the elimination round. A formed that morning team, of only
played a couple times before, and did not know each other prior
to registration (Team Megan and Dan) provide a Cinderella story
to the semi-finals. The Peanut Butter Root Beer Snakes shock Shinjury
Synergy in the semi-finals with winning the third game by knocking
down four kubbs (three field and one baseline) and the king with
their final three tosses. The Mighty McKies and Team Megan and
Dan play an endless semi-final match in front of numerous spectators.
The Mighty McKies battle the Peanut Butter Root Beer Snakes for
a second time during the day. At approximately 6:30pm, a destined
Peanut Butter Root Beer Snakes take the 2008 championship.
