Rockford Swedish Historical Society Kubb Tournament

The 48-team tournament was played in downtown Rockford at Ingersol Centennial Park, three blocks from the Erlander Home Museum. The 24 battlefields filled half of the park. The pitches were surrounded by numerous team tents and canopies. A light rain greeting the players from IL, WI, IA, MN, KS, PA, and Sweden. TV stations and newspapers appeared. Young and old played. As the rain went away and the sun slowly came out, the morning also turned into the afternoon. With that, the playoff rounds kicked off and the tournament heated up. 48 teams were reduced to 32 and then to 16. The round of 16 saw intense matches as teams tried to make it to the quarterfinals in the second largest tournament in the U.S. At around 4pm, eight teams were left standing and all six states were still alive. The 2010 U.S. National Champion The Ringers found themselves in the semi-finals facing a determined and hungry Run DMK from Des Moines, IA. Run DMK won the first game. However, The Ringers were able to win game two and outlast the third game which had eight, then nine, kubbs being tossed back and forth for several turns. The defending champion Kubbin' Missile Crisis were able to beat Ice Kubbs after an impressive tournament of sharp shooting by the first-time tournament Arlington Heights, IL tandom. Only two teams were left standing. The father/son team The Ringers who battled for 90 minutes against Run DMK and Kubbin' Missile Crisis who had been waiting for over 30 minutes. The 2010 U.S. National Champion from Eau Claire, WI and the defending Rockford SHS champion from Shafer, MN. In the end, Kubbin' Missile Crisis could not find their form that has taken them to numerous other tournament semi-finals and finals, the 2010 SHS championship, and this 2011 final. The Ringers made quick work in the finals and were crowned the 2011 Rockford Swedish Historical Society Champion.
